This week in 1984, One love – People get ready by Bob Marley and the Wailers reached its highest position of number 5 in the UK singles chart. It had entered the top 40 four weeks previously at number 35 and broke into the top 10 two weeks later. After one week at its peak position, the single fell to number 6 for a final week in the top 10. A further three weeks in the lower top 40 followed before the record left the chart.

One love – People get ready was released on the Island record label and was the sixth of eight UK top 10 hits for Bob Marley. It was taken from the gold-selling album Exodus, which peaked at number 8 in the UK album chart in 1977.

The original version of People get ready was written by Curtis Mayfield and was recorded by the Impressions in 1965. The single did not enter the UK chart.
