This week in 1984, What’s love got to do with it by Tina Turner reached its highest position of number 3 in the UK singles chart. It had entered the top 40 six weeks previously at number 40 and broke into the top 10 two weeks later. After one week at its peak position, the song stayed in the top 10 for another two weeks and then dropped into the lower top 40 for the final four weeks of its chart life.

What’s love got to do with it was released on the Capitol record label and was the fourth of eleven top 10 hits for Tina Turner in the UK (including two with Ike Turner). It was taken from the triple-platinum-selling album Private dancer, which peaked at number 2 in the UK album chart. The single was certified silver in the UK and was a US number 1.

The song returned to the top 40 in 1996 when a cover version was recorded by Warren G featuring Adina Howard. The cover peaked one place higher than Tina Turner’s version at number 2.
