Forty years ago this week, Rock bottom by Lynsey De Paul and Mike Moran reached its highest position of number 19 in the UK singles chart, having entered the top 40 three weeks previously at number 29. After one week at its peak position, the song started to slide down the chart but remained in the top 40 for another two weeks.

Rock bottom was released on the Polydor record label and was the last of seven UK top 10 hits for Lynsey De Paul and the only one for Mike Moran. It was the UK’s entry in the 1977 Eurovision Song Contest where it finished in second place with 121 points. This was 15 points behind the winning entry, L’oiseau et l’enfant by Marie Myriam representing France, which failed to enter the UK top 40, peaking at number 42.
