Puppet On A String – Sandie Shaw

Sandie Shaw took this Eurovision-winning song to the top of the UK singles chart for three weeks in 1967.

Puppet on a string by Sandie Shaw replaced Somethin’ stupid by Nancy Sinatra and Frank Sinatra at the top of the UK singles chart fifty years ago this week. It had entered the top 40 six weeks previously at number 27 and broke into the top 10 two weeks later.

The song stayed at number 1 for three weeks and then made way for Silence is golden by the Tremeloes. After falling from the top spot, the record spent another two weeks in the top 10, both of them in the top 5, and then dropped into the lower top 40 for the final five weeks of its chart life.

Puppet on a string was released on the Pye record label and was the last of three UK number 1 hits for Sandie Shaw. It was included on an album of the same name that did not enter the UK albums chart.

The song was the UK entry in the 1967 Eurovision Song Contest. It finished in first place with 47 points, twenty-five points ahead of Ireland’s second place entry, If I could choose by Sean Dunphy.
