This week in 1983, Love of the common people by Paul Young was at its highest position of number 2 in the UK singles chart for the last of three weeks. It had entered the top 40 four weeks previously at number 17 and broke into the top 10 a week later. After falling from its peak position, the song stayed in the top 10 for another four weeks, all of them in the top 5, and then spent the final two weeks of its chart life in the lower top 40.

Love of the common people was released on the CBS record label and was the third of seven UK top 10 hits for Paul Young. It was taken from the triple-platinum-selling album No parlez, which spent five weeks at the top of the UK album chart. The single was certified gold.

The first version of the song to enter the UK chart did so in 1970. It provided Nicky Thomas with his only UK hit, peaking at number 9.
